Before the Railways took over livestock transport, this road was a Drover road off the main turnpike through Tadley. Drovers herded sheep, cows, horses, and even turkeys down this road.

Round 3 – Answers

Drovers in Tadley

Before the Railways took over livestock transport, this road was a Drover road off the main turnpike through Tadley. Drovers herded sheep, cows, horses, and even turkeys down this road.

Q1   How many shoes did each cow have?      0, 2,  4 or 8  Answer: 8 Each cow has a cloven hoof, split into two toes. They had two cow shoes per foot.

Q2. Did Turkeys have shoes? Yes,  No, or  Maybe Answer: All three answers are correct: they did have felt pads tied to their feet or were driven through tar and feathers to form a “slipper.”

Q3 “id most “attle in Tadley originate from   England, Wales or Scotland? Answer: Cattle were mainly driven from Scotland and Wales. Tadley cattle came from Wales along the Ridgeway and crossed the river at Newbury hence,  place names like Welchman’s Welchman’s Mile.

Q4 How many Turnpikes pass through Tadley Parish? 0,1,2, or 4 Answer:  Two from Basingstoke, one through the centre of Tadley to Aldermaston, and one through Baughurst to Newbury.

Q5  Why is Halfpenny Lanee so-called? Answer: This was the price for a field to graze 20 cattle.

Q6  Where is the grave of John Mulford (of Mulford’sHilll) Mulford’sHilllimer West End Chapel, which he paid to be built?

Q7   How many Tadley detached villages were there in 1900? Answer: Two. These were regions of Lan, part of the Kingsclere Poor Law Union, where people experiencing poverty in Tadley were given work on the land. 

Q8. What happened to Blue Gown? Answer: It was thrown overboard en route to America. It was a famous racehorse associated with Tadley that was being sent to race in America and died when its spleen burst during a violent storm.

Q9   What was the name of Major George Roller’s Horse? Answer: Gabardine was named after the harsh, tightly woven fabric the famous Basingstoke Company used.

Q10    What is the link between” “100Wayss toCookk Ga” e” and Tadle? Answer: The author, Georgiana Hil,  lived in Browning Hill. A contemporary of Mrs Beeton, Georgiana catered to the less wealthy. An influential paper, “The Globe,” described her books as “curiosity in their way”, as they taught cooks” and  how to make cheap dishes that are not nasty”.”
